SOLD ~ Fair Winds Poppy and my Grandpa the Baseball Player by Nancy Medina

Fair Winds Poppy
by Nancy Medina

Palette Knife/Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

The evenings I stay with my Mom she is often watching the baseball games, waiting for the Cardinals to make an appearance. Her Dad, my grandfather "Poppy," (John Dobby) was a pitcher for the St. Louis Browns, the farm team (practice team) for the St. Louis Cardinals, when she was a little girl. One of my cousins in St. Louis found this old picture of my grandfather, and sent it to all the family, though it is not the best quality, it does show my lanky, athletic grandpa looking happy and relaxed in his uniform. He retired early from his baseball career, before the Browns went on to become the Baltimore Orioles, after throwing his back out. He opened a tavern in St. Louis that was pretty popular, back in a time when taverns were places whole families went to eat and visit with one another. I wish I knew all the stories, Mom does not remember many of them now. Perhaps it's a sign of my age that everything back then just seems so much more interesting to me now!

I thought your grandpa was handsome as an older man and I see he is even more handsome as a young man. There is something so engaging about this man that I just cannot put my words together right.

I love the brilliant poppy too, Nancy!
