I decide what to paint each day as almost the last step before picking up the brush. I mix most of my colors directly on the canvas, with the color reaction occurring when the brush picks up the hue beneath and around where it touches the surface. The fresh flowers dictate the evening's activities in Flower Mound Studio. Tonight the white lilies I bought a few days ago have opened just enough to catch my eye, especially hovering above their blue glass vase. So partially opened lilies were on the menu! I wanted to leave some of the very loose, very watercolor-like background on these. Lilies are conducive to watercolor, or perhaps it's vice versa....

I intentionally staged some orange on blue here, can you tell where I did that? You as the artist have the tools to create drama in your paintings, find opportunities in your floral setups to lay brilliant complements atop one another. Lay a stroke of pure color and fight the urge to blend it away.

Don't turn down the volume, turn it up. Let your color sing!

The studio  models take a bow!

Step 1 - Loose and transparent

Step 2 - adding the opaques

Love the blend of blue/white in the petals, Nancy. Always beautiful work.
