The Sisterhood, Yellow Roses

The Sisterhood - Yellow Roses

Oil on Canvas

The Sisterhood, Yellow Roses, is a new work on the easel this evening. These four yellow roses represent my sisters, Kim, Julie, Jackie, and I. Next week we will crowd into my mother's kitchen out on the farm and all pitch in to prepare a Thanksgiving feast under my Mom's supervision. It's noisy, it's too crowded, and no one can ever quite get the refrigerator door open without bumping someone in the process. But it is the best day of the year for our family.

These flowers are based on the work of the amazing photographer, Mary Carroll, who graciously allowed me to paint from her rose photos. I got absolutely excited when I saw Mary's rose photos and I think you will, too. You can see them on Mary's blog, In a Soft Light. Painting is about light. There is no color and no drama without it. Mary is a master of light and composition, and I am so grateful to her for inspiring me with her thoughts and her images.
